Astrology QuickStart part II. - Astrology elements

Personal view about astrology topics. What can you do and what can't you do with astrology. Part two is quick look of some elements for astrological analysis. In part three you can read more about astrology foundations an basic descriptions. If you are new to astrology this chapter is for you. You can upgrade this basic knowledge in later chapters. Part four are example steps for interpretation. This is just basics, you can develop your own techniques for interpretation

A View of the Forest

Even the most simple of astrologic charts, Natal Chart, involves 13 energy sources (Ascendant, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, North None, and Midheaven) in 12 signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces), in 12 houses, and 5 major aspects (Conjunction, Trine, Square, Opposition, Sextile) or none. These combinations generate (13*12*12*6) 11,232 variables which astrology must interpret.

Actually the 11,232 is a “bare-bones” figure, for traditional astrology also includes 32 Arabian Parts, of which “Part of Fortune” or “Pars Fortunae” or “Fortuna” is the most popular. Also included is the Parallel aspect, which forms when the geocentric longitude of two planets are within the orbs of a conjunction. It is interpreted as a conjunction. There are also several other aspects of secondary importance: the mildly favorable 30-degree semi-sextile, the mildly unfavorable 45-degree semi-quartile, the mildly unfortunate 135-degree sesquiquadrate, and the 150-degree quincunx that, although it is interpreted as mildly favorable, is considered as paradoxical, since it operates through inharmonious (eg, water and fire, or earth and air) signs. If one adds to this close to 100 Mid-Points developed by Dr. Ebertin, then the view of the natal forest is about almost complete.

The full view also includes Quintile (144, 108, 72, 36, 24, and 18-degree) aspects introduced by Kepler, and Mundane aspects that are measured in terms of differences in signs. For example, the Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Virgo are two (Cancer-Leo-Virgo) signs apart and are said to be in a mundane sextile to one another. Astrology also includes concepts such as Combust (when a planet is closer than 5 degrees to the Sun), Cazimi (or “in the heart of the Sun,” which refers to a planet within 0 degree and 17 minutes of the Sun’s longitude), and Abscission or Frustration that occurs when a planet simultaneously forms an aspect to two other planets: the aspect that culminates first is said to generate an abscission of energy that frustrates the later aspect. There are more of these concepts.

Transits and a Panorama

A forest can be viewed from an airplane or from a space shuttle, the latter providing a wider panorama. In comparison to the view from an airplane, which a natal chart represents, “transits” is the view from the space shuttle. If the focus of an astrologic study is an event in a person’s life, Transit Analysis (or Transits for short) or other predictive technique, Solar, Progression, Returns… is the technique that should be used. The term “transits” refers to the geocentric positions of the (day-to-day) planets on the date and time and location of the event.

Transit analysis begins with 11 transiting entities, the Sun through North Node, in 12 signs, in 12 houses, which form among themselves 5 major aspects. This combination generates 7920 transiting variables. The analysis looks at:

  1. the general impact attributable to the interaction of 7920 transiting variables, and
  2. the combined influences of 7,920 transiting variables on the 11,232 natal configurations of a particular individual.

The influences derived from (1) apply to every person. This is the part one reads as predictions in newspapers and magazines. The predictions are categorized by 12 house affairs as seen from the perspective of each Sun-sign. For example, if five transiting planets are passing through (i.e., transiting) Capricorn, as in January 1992, the predictions for the Sun-sign Capricorn for January 1992 would interpret their influences from the perspective of the 1st house. For Cancer, the planets would be seen as agitating the 7th house affairs, for Aries the 10th house affairs, for Libra the 4th house affairs ... That is, predictions for Cancer would place Cancer as the sign of the 1st house. The five planets in Capricorn, the opposite sign of Cancer, are then seen transiting Cancer’s 7th house. Therefore, the predictions for Cancer would contain positive or adverse - in January 1992 generally adverse - statements about marriage, intimate relationships, business partnerships ... These predictions apply equally to all persons with the Sun or the Ascendant in Cancer.

The analysis in (2) involves about (7920 * 11232) 90 million variables. One can see why astrology is sometimes envious of the task, DNA structures, confronting molecular biologists.

The Puzzle of Astrology

The panoramic view presented so far is still a two-dimensional picture. The other dimensions of the astrologic puzzle come in the form of:

  1. Which Zodiac (Tropical or Sidereal)?
  2. Which Coordinates (Geocentric or Heliocentric)?
  3. Which House System (of about a dozen: Equal, Placidus ...)?
  4. Which Cusps (Solar, Natal, Location, and/or Transiting)?
  5. Which Analysis (Transits, Progressions, CartoGraphy, Returns)?
  6. Which Astrology (Western, Hindu, Chinese, Aztec...)?

Astrology in Practice

The Traditional Approach

Traditional astrology has taken a practical approach to the number of variables involved. It simply reduces complex patterns into parts that it can interpret, of course, with some sacrifice of substance. This is best illustrated in terms of a theoretical example. Suppose that transiting Pluto at 22 degrees Libra and in 5th (Placidus) house (of a person with Cancer rising) is Square to transiting Uranus and transiting Neptune, the latter two conjunct to one another at 18 degrees of Capricorn in 7th house. Suppose also that Pluto is Square and the “Uranus/Neptune Conjunction” is in Opposition to natal Sun - which, therefore, must be in Cancer.

These are significant evolutionary influences on the Sun, all adverse. Astrology at the current state of art cannot interpret the pattern as a whole. It dissects it into parts: a) it can interpret some components, b) it can “guess” about a few parts, and c) it is totally helpless with others.

First the guesses:

  1. “Transiting Pluto Square Transiting Uranus” involves two long-term planets. Aspects between two long-term planets can continue for a long time - more or less a year. Since many events can take place in that period, astrology is not able to pinpoint categorically cause and effect relationships between aspects and events.
  2. “Transiting Pluto Square Transiting Neptune” involves two of the most distant planets. The consequences are the same as in (1).
  3. “Transiting Uranus Conjunct Transiting Neptune” is in the same category as (1) and (2).

Some astrologer may disagree with the assertion that astrology cannot interpret these aspects. For example, a positive aspect between transiting Uranus and Neptune may be “interpreted” with statements such as “A time when intuition blends well with inspiration and imagination. The sky is your limit ...” A casual skeptic would note that many statements in astrology read profound but say little, if anything. This aspect may continue on and off (i.e., direct-retrograde-direct) for more than a year. Since it depicts an aspect between two transiting planets, it affects everyone. It would be interesting to observe five billion human beings in this state of mind for that length of time, perhaps all chasing a rainbow.

I suggest that a long term aspect should be viewed as a trend or cycle rather than as predicator of individual events in that cycle. If the aspect is a Trine or Sextile, it should be looked as a positive “umbrella,” whatever the umbrella represents, over the influences from other aspects. If the aspect is a Square it should be viewed as a cause of a conflict, very likely an inner conflict. The Opposition is more difficult, for it can be both a “commotion” and/or a challenge that in turn can be the impetus to achieve something positive.

The Conjunction is the most difficult aspect to evaluate, for it is the most intense of all aspects, and it has both positive and adverse characteristics. As I see it, conjunctions are forces that initiate a “growth” process. The adversity associated with conjunctions, which can be severe during the process, are nothing but the impetus to discard obsolete habits so that growth can take place. The “habits” being discarded include ideas, thoughts, values, beliefs, illusions, people, and tangible elements which no longer serve a purpose, indeed perhaps even block progress. Conjunctions are the occasions when one is induced to take an inventory of life, to look back - not necessarily in a nostalgic fashion - and understand the circumstances that culminated in present status quo, to ask “Quo Vadis?” (Where are you going?), and to ascertain that the direction taken in life is the direction that should be taken.

Returning to example, the aspects which astrology is able to interpret include:

  1. “Pluto Square Natal Sun” signals a major process of transformation. Pluto is the planet of “endings and new beginnings,” a period when one phase of life or life-style is gradually replaced with another. This aspect is qualitatively well understood by astrology, though the ramifications are not fully appreciated. Since Pluto is assumed to be in 5th house and in an adverse Square to natal Sun, depending on one’s circumstances, this cycle is likely to manifest itself as one in which serious problems with a romantic affair, children; major losses through a speculative activity ... are highlighted.
  2. “Uranus Opposite Natal Sun” signals a cycle characterized by sudden and unexpected obstacles, challenges, and “commotion” taxing the nerves. The pressure may lead also to health problems, perhaps in the form of ulcers and excessive smoking and/or drinking. Since the example assumes 7th house affairs, this is a period of about a year in which sudden and impulsive changes in marital status, intimate relations, or business partnerships, not necessarily all initiated by the native, can play havoc with one’s life. (If the aspect were a square, the influence would be interpreted as more severe and agitating.)
  3. “Neptune Opposite Natal Sun” - signals a cycle of about one to two years in (assumed) 7th house affairs in which imagination, fantasy, deception, self-deception, or illusion are at work. This can lead to a situation in which events can “pull the rug from under one’s feet.” Depending on individual circumstances, the cycle may manifest in a variety of ways: infidelity in marriage, a deceptive business-partner or business proposition, a “false” affair in which one falls in love with someone for the wrong reasons; attributing to people assets they do not possess, viewing pragmatic situations through “rose-colored” glasses, roaming in the clouds ... It is a time marked by major mistakes now and “rude awakenings” later! Many a “tragic turn of events,” transitions from “promise of one moment” to “oblivion now” is caused by influences like this.

The Unknowns and Gray Areas

It should be pointed out that the adversity associated with the Opposition “finds” the native more often on the receiving end of events perpetrated by others in the immediate environment, whereas in the case of the square, the native is the likely perpetrator of these events. Although the three influences outlined above are well-understood, obviously all the ramifications of a major “process” are not known. These are the so-called “unknowns and gray areas” in astrology," even though some of the “gray” is obviously caused by differences in individual circumstances.

A more significant confusion in interpretations arises from the fact that different aspects are interpreted in a similar fashion. For example, there is no appreciable difference in interpretation between “Neptune Square Sun,” “Neptune Square Moon,” and Neptune Square Venus." The latter influence is more likely to involve a “false” love affair than Neptune-Sun, whereas Neptune-Sun is more likely to be seen as “taking a wrong turn in life.” However, such differences are frequently more semantics than real. For example, a middle-age man who leaves his wife of 25 years to marry a 24-year old beauty, a Neptune-Venus event, two years later may be facing a “The Last Tango” end, confronting all variables of his life: a Neptune-Sun event. The differentiation between the effects on the Moon and Venus is even more nebulous, as also the differentiation between the Square and the Opposition.

In correspondence with Axiom-2 discussed earlier, all major adverse aspects can also be used positively, for example for a major creative work or some other achievement. This effort does not cancel the adverse influences. However, the positive application may bring about a positive influence on all other events associated with the pattern. For example, the effort directed to writing a book can diminish the tragic impact of, for instance, a wife who has eloped to the sunset with a lover.

According to a documentary on WETA, many artists are found to be suffering from manic depression. This can initiate an interesting astrologic debate. Did the person become an artist as a result of an “artistic” pattern in his/her natal chart, or the talent evolved primarily as a means of surviving the depression. Since there is a “subjective” element to art appreciation, the quality of the art, thus the side debate whether of not the piece is the creation of a true talent that can be traced to a natal pattern, is less important here. However, these types of debates underline the difficulty experienced by astrologers in finding a connection between profession or talent and a definitive natal pattern.

This has significant consequences, for it suggests that rather than searching for artistic talent, focus should be directed to flagging out charts that suggest “depression.” Depression is easier to find in a chart than artistic pattern.

Returning to the example of Pluto, Neptune, Uranus and the Sun, for all practical purposes, astrology reduces the influence to the three distinct components outlined above. The combined effect of the Opposition of “Uranus-Conjunct-Neptune” on the Sun is not clear in astrology. This also applies to the combined effects of “Uranus-Opposition/Pluto-Square,” “Neptune-Opposition/Pluto-Square,” and the effect of the entire pattern on the natal Sun.

Modern Approach

Faced with similar numbers of DNA patterns, molecular biologists have taken the defensible approach to their puzzle by meticulously building each layer of progress on a solid foundation. Since their effort is also generously funded, the slow and arduous process is already achieving fine results. In contrast, the mode of approach in astrology is dictated more by confusion, frustration, impatience, and alas, also greed. Rather than concentrating on and building upon the traditional Sign-House-Aspect interpretations, which were accurate enough to attract astrologers to astrology in the first place, modern years have witnessed evolution of other ways of looking at the phenomena. The justification used is one of:

“The interpretations of traditional astrology are fine but incomplete. We need modern methods to deepen our insight.”

The main fallacy of this proposal is that it presumes the traditional interpretations are already saturated. In view of the number of variables involved, it is more sensible to suggest that astrology is a phenomenon that can evolve indefinitely along traditional lines. The practical consequences of the “already saturated” view have been devastating on credible astrology. The popular culture has used this view as a pass key to translate haphazardly constructed overnight inspirations to books and software, postulating with conviction that these concoctions supplemented the traditional picture. Since people pursuing astrology are inherently driven by thirst to know as much about themselves as astrology can provide, there is a ready audience that “huggingly” welcomes these “other ways” of looking at things. In its enthusiasm, the audience forgets to ask “does this make any sense?”

Some of the most respected names in astrology in the last 20 to 30 years have reached fame through these devices. The pollution and clutter they began generating has evolved to the erosion of today. Presently even well-intentioned “scientific” studies are nothing but preordained scribble in which the author looks at and offers only those variables that support an outcome that he/she wished to convey from the start. In view of the rich flea market of variables from which to choose, this is not difficult in astrology.

Since there are no concrete laws and proofs in astrology, there are also no universally acceptable criteria by which to judge the credibility of individual theories and techniques. The Premise Analysis proposed earlier is the only means by which one can scrutinize the techniques and theories of astrology. The tools to be used include a combination of:

1) Reasoning, 2) Common Sense, 3) “Educated” Guess

Sun-Moon-Ascendant

Astrology differentiates between three levels of personalities, as defined by the Sun, Ascendant, and the Moon.

The Sun

The Sun sign characteristics reflect the inner identity or the “Individuality,” not the outer personality. These characteristics seldom manifest on the surface. Unless the individual has developed a considerable degree of self-awareness and a habit of occasionally taking an inventory of life, the individuality remains buried until about mid-adulthood. It is then reflected in the fruits and achievements and in the direction of one’s progress. Until that stage is reached, the native is only aware of passing sensations of inner identity. The strong influences from the Ascendant - outer personality - and the Moon - daily moods and sensitivities - block, confuse, and dilute the energies from the Sun. The combined influence is further complicated by the fact that the remaining planets, each with its unique contribution, modify the energies of the Sun, Moon, and the Ascendant.

Ascendant

As previously stated, the Ascendant is the sign of the cusp of the 1st house. Astrology views planets, if any, in the 1st house as a constant source of energy in dealing with one’s environment. They manifest the relationship to that environment and define the mask one projects on the environment - the outer personality.

The Moon

Western Astrology attributes to the Moon feminine characteristics that may be designated as personality traits. However, unlike the Ascendant, the Moon influences the manner in which one views and experiences the environment, the way one responds to the circumstances and stimuli emanating from the environment. The daily transiting influences of the Moon are associated with mood changes, receptivity, behavior, feelings, and the subconscious.

A review of the Moon’s physical characteristics and astrologic history may be of interest. The Moon is approximately 238,800 miles distant from Earth and traverses her orbit around Earth, a distance of approximately 1,494,000 miles, in 27 days, 7 hours, 43 minutes, and 11 seconds, at a speed of about 0.633 miles per second. The Moon always shows the same side to Earth. Her phases vary according to her position relative to the Sun and Earth. When the Moon is conjunct the Sun - between Earth and the Sun - it is designated as the “New” Moon. Then, a crescent forms and develops into First Quarter or Half Moon. In this state the crescent faces away from the Sun. The Full Moon - in Opposition to the Sun - develops next. The bright light seen on the Moon is the light she reflects from the Sun. The light begins to recede until she reaches the Last Quarter phase and New Moon once again. Every 19 years the same phases occur on the same dates and same degrees of the zodiac. This is called the “Metonic Cycle” of the Moon. Since a Lunar day is about 720 hours, there are twelve Lunar days to our Solar year.

Occult interpretations of the Moon attribute to her phlegmatic, feminine, negative, cold, moist, fruitful, magnetic, and convertible qualities. She is seen as the mirror and reflector of other planetary bodies. The occultists saw in the Moon a dual character: Kama Rupa (the Animal Desire), and the catalyst, which affects the emotional and psychic mentality.

The traditional view of the Moon is one of “Reflector of the Past,” “Interpreter of the Present,” and “Decipherer of the Future.” The Sun and the Moon are seen as two time-markers that also represent the “Immortal” individuality and the “Mortal” personality. Some traditional astrologers suggest that the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant determine about 80 percent of one’s being. This thought originates from Hindu astrology. I suggest that the “80 percent” is a result derived from an overzealous translation. Not only is such a number meaningless, it also contradicts common sense. Assuming an equal distribution in 12 signs, 8.5 percent of the world’s population would be represented by a particular Sun-sign. Of these 8.5 percent would have Ascendant in the same sign, and 8.5 percent of these, in turn, would have the Moon in the same sign. Based on a population of 5 billion people, this would result in more than 3 million people with similar finger prints. The Hindus probably implied that the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant account for a significant portion of the characteristics of an individual. A “significant portion” can be any percentage that is significant.

The Hindus also defined the “Mansions of the Moon” or Nakshatras which are 27 stellar groups of each 13 degree and 20 minutes of arc, completing together a 360-degree circle. The path they describe is called the “Royal Road.” The nakshatras are very similar to the Arabian “Menzils” and the Chinese “Sieu.” The 28 to 32 Arabian parts are likely to be a derivative of the Hindu mansions. “Prenatal Epoch” is a modern rearrangement of these mansions, and the critical degrees in each mansion. Some traditional astrologers consider the sign and house occupied by the Moon as perhaps the most significant influences in life. While there may be an occultist and Hindu bias in this view, traditional astrology also attributes to the Moon’s position considerable importance.

Astrologic Predictions

The term “Transits” is used in astrology to refer to planets currently in motion. The same word is also used (as an abbreviation) for “Transit Analysis”, the technique that analyses the impact of transiting planets (i.e., Transits again) on a particular natal chart. The expression “currently in motion” is used to signify time at the present, time of a particular cycle (in the past/future), or the exact time of a particular event. If the objective is to investigate the circumstances of an event in the past, then transiting planets surrounding the date and time of that event are used in the analysis.

The analysis of a (known) event from the past, as complicated as this exercise may be, is obviously a much simpler task than “predicting the future.” Because there are so many unknowns and gray areas in astrology, one must frequently examine patterns associated with events from the past for possible clues to future events. This is not a simple procedure, for planetary patterns are never exactly the same, and as important, the circumstances surrounding the person may be significantly different. For example, it is one thing to associate the patterns on January 16, 1991 with George Bush, the President of the United States, it is another to relate them to George Bush, a businessman in Texas. If the focus were on the latter George Bush (with the same chart as President George Bush), obviously it would be impossible to associate planetary patterns on that date with the Iraq War. Because astrology cannot foresee the exact circumstances surrounding a person, its predictive powers are limited only to “likely” events. (See my prediction about the outcome of the elections in 1992.) This is in agreement with the suggestions postulated in Part-I, about how astrology may be used to prepare periodically a “cycles of opportunities” chart. It will be outlined in more detail in a later section.

Predictions are derived from a combination of four sources:

  1. “personality” of the transiting planet
  2. aspects formed between transiting planets
  3. aspects formed between transiting planets and natal planets
  4. houses affected by the transit

The house positions of transiting planets on the natal chart provide a clue about which “affairs of life” are affected. The aspects foretell the way (i.e., positively or adversely) these affairs are affected. The personality of the transiting planet provides additional clues about how the influence is likely to manifest. Needless to say, together with relationships, transits are the most difficult and challenging branch of astrology.

Sources of Energy, Planetary Personalities

The personality of the transiting planet affecting a person is a significant indicator of the type of influence that person is likely to experience. So a review of planetary personalities is warranted. In all instances, the duration of an aspect is measured from 1.58 degree approaching to .42 degree separating - also during retrograde motion.

  1. The Moon - is the fastest moving body in astrology. It transits an entire sign in about two to three days - at a rate of about 12 to 15 degrees per day. The Moon’s aspects last a few hours only, although its presence in a sign is felt for the entire duration. This is especially true once a month when the Moon transits the signs and houses occupied by the natal Sun, Moon, and Venus. In general, these occasions are experienced very favorably. Lunar cycles can affect one’s mood, perception, and sensitivity, and cause behavioral changes.
  2. The Sun - transits a sign in about 30 days - at a rate of about one degree per day. The Sun highlights the sign characteristics and house affairs it transits. The influence of its aspect lasts about a day or two, although the Sun’s presence in a sign and house is felt for the entire month. If the influence of its aspect is positive, it enhances one’s level confidence, courage, and assertiveness. Sun cycles may bring about events involving employers and authority figures.
  3. Mercury - is regarded as the messenger. It transits a sign usually in 20 to 30 days, when it is in direct motion. It may remain in a sign longer, if it turns retrograde and then direct again in the same sign - Mercury is retrograde three to four times every year, each retrograde period lasting usually 15 to 25 days. Mercury is always in the vicinity of the Sun, sometimes following, other times ahead.

Mercury’s influence is neither positive nor adverse. The quality of the influence depends on the pattern it forms. Mercury cycles last about a day or two. The influence may be experienced as improved or blocked communications, harmonious or irritating daily events, optimistic or pessimistic outlook, pleasant or unpleasant messages and/or correspondence. The positive cycles signal a period when the mind is sharp and constructive. They also bestow a “I got away with it” luck, even though astrologically “luck” is associated more with Venus. There is a correlation between adverse Mercury cycles - especially when Mercury is retrograde - and accidents, traffic problems, and other unhappy events.
  4. Venus - is the planet of harmony and beauty, and is considered as an inherently “benefic” (i.e., positive nature) planet. It transits a sign usually in 25 to 30 days. Venus is retrograde once about every two years, the retrograde period lasting between one to two months. Venus’ aspect cycles last a day or two, although Venus’ presence in a sign and house is felt for the entire duration. This is especially true on occasions when Venus is transiting the signs and houses of the natal Sun. Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars, if these signs are not afflicted in the chart. The influence bestows inner peace, warmth, harmony, and indeed, radiance and magnetism. Artistic pursuits, creative urge, romantic encounters, pleasant experiences... enter one’s diary.
  5. Mars - is the most potent and dynamic planet in the zodiac, and is considered as inherently “malefic” (i.e., adverse nature). It transits a sign usually in about 60 days. Mars may remain in a sign up to about six months, if it turns retrograde and then direct again in the same sign - it is retrograde once about every two years. Like the Sun, Mars energizes the house affairs it transits. However, while the Sun is dynamic and energetic, Mars can be these and also aggressive, challenging, and confronting. The aspect cycles last 4 days, although Mars’ presence in a sign and house is felt for the entire duration. This is especially true if Mars is transiting the natal Sun-sign (i.e., a tight feeling), over volatile planets (i.e., “stormy”), or over the Moon or Venus (i.e., magnetic). If positive, it adds zest to one’s life. Projects and ambitions which were “on hold” are reactivated. However, it is also easy for Mars to become nasty. Adverse aspects by Mars can bring about frustration, tension, tightness, arguments, anger, violence, violent accidents, and danger.
  6. Jupiter - is the planet of expansion, excess, good fortune, and finances, and is considered as inherently benefic. It transits a sign in 12 months, including a retrograde period of about 140 days every year. The aspect cycles last 9 days. A positive Jupiter cycle bestows an optimistic outlook on life. And why not? “Things turn out just right...” under its “fortunate” influence. Possibilities abound: financial gains; a desire to expand in some form (e.g., attend “adult education” classes); an urge to broaden one’s horizons through travel... Of course, Jupiter may also deny all of these. The conjunction by Jupiter is usually accompanied by an excess: weight gain, excessive spending, talkativeness...
  7. Saturn - is regarded as a sober, limiting, testing, restricting, teaching, restructuring... planet. It is considered as inherently malefic. Saturn transits a sign in about two-and-half years, including a retrograde period of approximately 160 days every year. The aspect cycles last 22 days. However, the planet also works in the background, restructuring the house affairs it transits. Saturn’s transits of the natal Sun, Moon, and Venus can be an ordeal that lasts, on and off, for the entire duration. Problems in major affairs - marriage, a job situation, career... - that were ignored, surface and confront, demanding a solution. The situation resolves in one way or another (e.g., a stronger marriage or a divorce), and usually for the better after the fact, but the cycle is a trying experience while events unfold. Saturn’s rewards are also substantive, but they must be earned through hard work. For example, if Saturn is transiting 9th house (publications...) and approaching a trine with the natal Sun, a writer should have a manuscript ready for publication. Otherwise, a wonderful cycle of opportunity is wasted. This waste also explains why traditional astrology does not ascribe major importance to positive Saturn cycles. Most people simply waste it, and then observe that nothing really important happened to them.
Comment: People who do not believe in astrology need only to jot down the dates of severe experiences in their lives that lasted a year or two (e.g., divorce proceedings, illness, joblessness...). They should then mark the positions of transiting Saturn on those dates in their natal chart. In almost all instances, Saturn will be found transiting (or square, or opposing) a house that is associated with the problem (e.g., 7th, divorce; 6th, illness or joblessness; 10th, career problems; 12th, hospitalization...)
  8. Uranus - is the planet that is associated with sudden and unexpected major developments in life. These events include sudden gains or losses, uprooting changes, a prolonged period of creativity or eccentricity... Uranus is considered as inherently malefic. It transits a sign in about seven years, including a retrograde period of approximately 160 days every year. The aspect cycles last 38 days. However, Uranus’ transits (or square or opposing) of the natal Sun, Moon, and Mars can be an uprooting ordeal that lasts, on and off, for more than a year. In contrast, Uranus’ transit of natal Venus (or trine or sextile to natal Moon) are one of the most stimulating - romantic and creative - cycles ever experienced.
  9. Neptune - is the planet that is associated with emotional, spiritual, and psychic experiences and phenomena. Neptune is considered as an inherently malefic planet. A positive Neptune cycle is a wonderful experience. It bestows a prolonged period of creativity, illumination, imagination, and inspiration. However, Neptune’s influences are nebulous. Adverse Neptune cycles are accompanied by treachery, deception, self-deception, illusions, delusions, false hopes and expectations, dreams, severe regret, and heightened telephatic senses. Many “I was reborn” experiences can be traced directly to influences by Neptune. Severe natal patterns involving Neptune are probably the cause why some of the most renown artists, musicians, poets, writers... suffer from manic depression. Neptune’s transit of a sign may last almost two decades, including a retrograde period of about 160 days every year. The aspect cycles last 76 days.
  10. Pluto - is the planet of regeneration. Its cycles mark major phases of “endings and new beginnings” in life. Pluto is considered as an inherently malefic planet. On the surface, Pluto’s impact appears similar to a “restructuring” process by Saturn. However, one recognizes - usually a few years after the fact - that the change Pluto wrought is permanent. Thus, if a Saturn process may be viewed as a bump on one’s existing path, a Pluto process is indeed a new path, not a continuation on the previous track. In some ways the transformation is also similar to “I was reborn” experience that is associated with Neptune, but in this case the change is tangible and visible: a new and different life-style. Pluto’s transit of a sign may last up to two decades, including a retrograde period of about 160 days every year. Aspects formed by Pluto last 76 days.
  11. North Node - is not understood well as a transiting influence. It may have something to do with experiences involving special groups with which a person is associated. The node is always retrograde. Its aspects last about 38 days.

Retrograde Cycles - Traditional astrology interprets retrograde periods as cycles during which the impact of positive aspects are diminished, while the effect of adverse aspects are exacerbated. I disagree! I interpret retrograde periods strictly as cycles of transition, during which a person is preoccupied with unfinished business from the last cycle. This is true of all planets with long retrograde cycles, but it is especially the case with Pluto and Saturn. These two planets can reshape the circumstances of one’s life. In general, the type of transition one experiences depends on the planet. For example, if it is a retrograde cycle of Mercury, the “unfinished” tasks may involve only something minor, like “putting the finishing touches” on a previous project before starting a new project. In turn, the transition phase associated with a Pluto cycle may mean a move from Washington, DC to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to begin a new life. On the surface the transition is arduous, for there is an unending list of things to do. However, this does not mean that adversity is enhanced, nor that the promise of the opportunity is diminished.

Aspects formed by Transiting Planets

The transiting planets may form the following major aspects: conjunction (which is positive if the planet is a benefic; adverse if not, with the exception of Mars or Uranus conjunct Venus), trine (positive and flowing), sextile (a positive promise of sorts), square (inner conflicts, but may be also a trying situation involving others), and opposition (challenges, obstacles, confrontations, generally experienced from external sources). The Grand-Trine marks a fortunate pattern involving three planets that are trine to one another. The T-Square is an especially severe pattern in which two planets that are in opposition are both square a third planet. The Cross is even more severe version of T-Square.

Comment: I do not use “lesser” aspects in transits, for there are already a substantial number of variables in transits. That is, 11 transiting planets can form 121 angles among themselves, and 121 angles to 11 natal planets. A portion of these angles are major aspects that are scattered in 12 houses, also triggering potentials hidden in natal patterns. If one had to analyze minor aspects too, soon a point would be reached where everything would seem possible.

The aspects formed by transits are technically the same major aspects seen on a natal chart, and they have a similar effect. Although transiting aspects are not lasting, their impact may also be felt for life. For example, if a two-day Mercury cycle - such as “Mercury in 3rd house conjunct Mars, both square Saturn in 6th” - is accompanied by an accident that leads to amputation of a leg, then obviously the reverberations from this “little” cycle may be much more severe than natal patterns and longer transit cycles. In other words, short cycles, especially “accident-prone” ones, should not be underestimated.

Adverse Cycles

The term “adverse” is used to denote the effect of adverse aspects - square and opposition - on a person. The astrologic delineations do not differentiate between square aspects and oppositions, for astrology is not aware of differences. It is customary to view the square as the root cause of inner conflicts and problems, whereas the opposition is associated more with problems and conflicts caused by other people or by external circumstances. This differentiation is nebulous at best, but it may be partially true. On the other hand, “external circumstances” can be used also as an “escape clause” to include everything astrologers want to include in it. For example, a person’s progress in life is blocked frequently by “personality” quirks (e.g., complacency, lack of ambition, drive, self-discipline...) in the person. It is natural for this person to shift the blame (for lack of progress) on “bad luck” or other people. However, “other people” may be merely reacting to the peculiarities projected by this person. If so, the “internal versus external” difference between the effects of square and opposition reduces to semantics, for ultimately the root causes of the conflict are the traits in the person. Astrologers who seemingly differentiate between the effects of square and opposition in this fashion may be playing word games to hide the fact that they are unable to differentiate between the two.

Adverse aspects also include the conjunction, if one of the bodies forming the aspect is a malefic planet. Some astrologers interpret the conjunction by transit as adverse only if the same two planets also form an adverse pattern in the natal chart. This interpretation applies especially to conjunctions involving Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

The adverse transiting aspects affect each individual differently. The severity of the impact is a function of the patterns in natal chart. If there are already severe patterns in natal chart, then the effect of the transiting aspect is intensified. For example, “transiting Saturn square to natal Sun” is less severe if the Sun is trine to Saturn in natal chart. On the other hand, the effect is significantly intensified if the Sun is square to Saturn also in the natal chart. In this case, the transit triggers the (already adverse) potential in natal chart. The combined impact may bring about a mid-life crisis in some form. Many suicides by adults probably coincide with these types of cycles.

The foregoing delineations apply only to a selected number of adverse aspects. That is, 11 transiting planets and 12 natal planets can generate 132 aspects. If these are analyzed for each of conjunction, trine, sextile, square, and opposition, the effort would require theoretically 660 delineations. Even if the “adverse conjunction, square, opposition” and “positive conjunction, trine, sextile” delineations are combined, the task would still require 264 interpretations. However, combined with real-life examples and illustrations throughout this book, the delineations which follow still provide a comprehensive outline of aspects. The following delineations apply regardless of the houses affected by the transit.

  1. Adverse aspects involving the SUN and Moon - last only a few hours and are not consequential. These periods coincide with diminished levels of confidence and assertiveness, and wavering convictions. The Moon’s transit of the (natal) Sun-sign marks a period (of two or three days) during which Sun’s individuality glows. However, the opposite may be the case if, for example, transiting Saturn is adversely positioned with respect to the Sun-sign. In this case, the Moon is also adversely influenced by Saturn. It may turn out a depressing transit cycle.
  2. Adverse aspects involving the SUN and Mercury (or Mercury adverse Mercury) - mark a period of serious confusion and uncertainty. The mind is in a worrying, fretful, restless, nervous... state. Fortunately these periods do not last long. One should not make significant changes or reach binding decisions during this cycle. This aspect lasts one or two days.
  3. Adverse aspects involving the SUN and Venus (or Venus adverse Venus) - are not serious. They can mark a “boring” period, although emotions (and sexuality) are aroused. This aspect lasts one or two days.
  4. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving the SUN and Mars (or Mars adverse Mars, or Sun adverse Sun) - mark a period during which passions rule. This cycle can cause violence in some people - some murders are committed probably under this influence. The person affected by this cycle is inclined to behave inconsiderately, impulsively, and in a dictatorial fashion. This behavior can prompt nasty arguments and quarrels, especially in situations of cohabitation. In more severe cases, there may be a tendency to overreact to situations and to rely on force to resolve conflicts... The effect of “transiting Sun adverse natal Sun” is appreciably milder than the “Mars versus Sun” and “Mars versus Mars” combinations. Moreover, “Sun conjunct Sun” is not necessarily adverse, but it can be. (I suggest that “transiting Sun adverse natal Mars” is less severe than “transiting Mars adverse natal Sun or Mars,” especially since the former lasts only about a day.) If this aspect is formed by the Sun to natal or transiting Mars, it lasts only about one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Mars to natal Sun, it may last 4 or 5 days.
  5. Adverse aspects involving the SUN and Jupiter (or Jupiter adverse Jupiter) - mark a period during which it is considered unwise to start new enterprises, to conclude important financial deals, to initiate legal proceedings, or to request major favors from superiors - this includes request for a salary increase. I suggest that these adverse potentials are more likely if the transiting planet is Jupiter, and it is positioned in 5th (speculation), 7th (partnerships), 8th (joint finances), and 9th (legal matters) houses. Otherwise, adverse Jupiter cycles are likely to manifest as extra expenses for repairs, unnecessary purchases... If this aspect is formed by the Sun to natal or transiting Jupiter, it lasts only about one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Jupiter to natal Sun, it may last 9 or 10 days - or (on-and-off) up to about three months if Jupiter is “direct-retrograde-direct” over the natal Sun.
  6. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving the SUN and Saturn - mark a dull, sober, melancholic, pessimistic, and severely depressing cycle. The Sun’s confidence is taken away. Business affairs, ambitions, romance, and progress in general may stagnate seriously during this period. There appear road blocks in every direction... If this aspect is formed by the Sun to natal or transiting Saturn, it lasts only about one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Saturn to natal Sun, it may last 22 days - or (on-and-off) up to about six months if Saturn is direct-retrograde-direct over the natal Sun.
  7. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving the SUN and Uranus) - mark a cycle which is ruled by nervous disorders, restlessness, eccentricity, excitability, tenseness, dissatisfaction, impatience... “I feel like climbing the walls” is typical of this influence. It may bring about serious disharmony with people in one’s immediate environment. This cycle may also coincide with a major (and undesired) move to a new location. If this aspect is formed by the Sun to natal or transiting Uranus, it lasts one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Uranus to natal Sun, it may last about 38 days - or (on-and-off) up to about a year if Uranus is direct-retrograde-direct over the natal Sun.
  8. Adverse aspects involving the SUN and Neptune - can erode will power and resolution, and disintegrate one’s individuality. People who have this aspect in their natal chart are generally very nice and trusting souls. In extreme cases, these persons can function primarily in spiritual and emotional dimensions. They do not possess sufficient ingredients to deal with the physical world. One can recognize them by their etherial presence and alluring aloofness.

The transiting influence is similar. A person under this cycle may appear unorthodox or exotic and act in inexplicable ways, as if responding to an inner call. The relationships formed under this influence do not last, for the person craves spiritual fulfillment from as many sources as possible. This need eventually brings them in contact with people who take advantage of them. If this aspect is formed by the Sun to natal or transiting Neptune, it lasts about one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Neptune to the natal Sun, it may last 76 days - or (on-and-off) up to about two years if Neptune is direct-retrograde-direct over the natal Sun.

Comment: This pattern is probably very strong in natal charts of young people who have joined groups like Hare Krishna. A transiting aspect involving Neptune may have triggered the natal potentials at the time of their conscription to the group. This influence (but perhaps more the “Moon-Neptune” and Venus-Neptune" combinations) may also manifest as an astrologic ingredient of drug addiction and prostitution, especially in natal charts which possess these inclinations. “Sun-Neptune” and/or “Moon-Neptune” aspects are also necessary ingredients in persons who claim psychic powers. However, their charts must also contain tangible strengths to enable them to find practical outlets to these “gifts.” For example, a strong Saturn is also essential.
  9. Adverse aspects involving the SUN and Pluto - mark a turning point in life, a phase of “major endings and new beginnings.” The same is also true of a “Sun positive Pluto” cycle. However, the adversity marks a difficult and ponderous transition phase. If this aspect is formed by the Sun to natal or transiting Pluto, it lasts about one or two days and is generally inconsequential. If the aspect is formed by Pluto to the natal Sun, it may last 76 days - or (on-and-off) up to two years if Pluto is direct-retrograde-direct over the natal Sun.

Comment: Under an adverse Pluto cycle, a financial advisor to the Saudi government may decide to give up a very flattering position to become an astrologer in USA. An “irresistible” urge by Pluto in Libra square my Sun in Cancer in September 1980 prompted me to do just that. Although the transition was difficult, and there were moments of regret, ultimately I am happy with the decision.
  10. Adverse aspects involving the SUN and North Node - mark a cycle during which problems or an unpleasant situation arises through groups with which one is associated. (I interpret all adverse aspects involving the Node in this fashion. Conversely, all positive aspects are indicators of potential benefits one may realize through association with groups.)
  11. Adverse aspects involving the MOON and planets - The adverse aspects between the Moon and a particular planet act similar to combined influences of “Sun adverse Planet-X” and “Venus adverse Planet-X.” However, while “Venus conjunct Mars/Uranus/Neptune” are considered as positive, the same conjunctions with the Moon are viewed as adverse.
  12. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving MERCURY and Mars - mark a period of restlessness, irritability, impulsive speech and actions, hasty judgement, worries, and harassing conditions. If this aspect is formed by Mercury to natal or transiting Mars, it lasts one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Mars to natal Mercury, it may last 4 to 5 days.

Caution: One must use extra care at all times during periods when Mercury is adverse with Mars, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, especially in traffic. Mars, Saturn, and Uranus are more critical when one is involved in hazardous activities or in situations that require handling of tools and sharp objects. Neptune is generally not associated with accidents. However, it can contribute indirectly, by diminishing concentration and awareness.
  13. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving MERCURY and Jupiter - mark a period when the mind is scattered and concentration is difficult. There may be also a tendency to talk excessively. If this aspect is formed by Mercury to natal or transiting Mercury, it lasts one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Jupiter to natal Mercury, it may last 9 or 10 days - or up to about three months if Jupiter is direct-retrograde-direct over Mercury.
  14. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving MERCURY and Saturn - mark a period of severe unhappiness, pessimism, depression, pains (e.g., rheumatism)... This cycle may also bring about trying situations with people in one’s immediate environment. If this aspect is formed by Mercury to natal or transiting Saturn, it lasts one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Saturn to natal Mercury, it may last 22 days - or up to about six months if Saturn is direct-retrograde-direct over Mercury.
  15. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving MERCURY and Uranus - are similar to Mercury aspects to Mars: a period of excitability, nervousness, tenseness, and impatience. As with “Sun adverse Uranus”, this aspect is typically experienced as “I feel like climbing the walls.” The person affected by this cycle is inclined to behave in irritating ways and use excessive sarcasm. It may bring about serious disharmony with people in one’s immediate environment. The cycle may also coincide with a major (and unwanted) move to a new location. If this aspect is formed by Mercury to natal or transiting Uranus, it lasts one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Uranus to natal Mercury, it may last about 38 days - or up to about a year if Uranus is direct-retrograde-direct over Mercury.
  16. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving MERCURY and Neptune - mark a fuzzy state of mind. There is a tendency to fantasize, but not in a constructive or productive fashion. The fantasies are a combination of “lost in thought” reveries, strange ideas, and impractical goals. Treachery, fraud, and deception are very likely under this influence. They may be initiated by the person affected by this cycle, or - more likely - the person is on the receiving end of them. If this aspect is formed by Mercury to natal or transiting Neptune, it lasts one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Neptune to natal Mercury, it may last about 76 days - or up to about two years if Neptune is direct-retrograde-direct over Mercury.
  17. Adverse aspects involving VENUS and Mars - can be very passionate, but not all in a constructive way. The cycle is marked by “lower’s quarrels” and petty emotional differences. This is a combination that can lead to infidelity. It usually signals a romantic encounter. If this aspect is formed by Venus to natal or transiting Mars, it lasts about one or two days - sometimes more than a week if it is a transiting aspect. If the aspect is formed by Mars to natal Venus, it may last 4 or 5 days.
  18. Adverse aspects involving VENUS and Jupiter - mark a period of boredom. The person affected by this cycle is likely to encounter circumstances that are formal, stiff, overly conventional, or simply boring. If this aspect is formed by Venus to natal or transiting Jupiter, it lasts about one or two days - sometimes more than a week if it is a transiting aspect. If the aspect is formed by Jupiter to natal Venus, it may last 9 or 10 days - or up to about three months if Jupiter is direct-retrograde-direct over Venus.
  19. Adverse (including conjunction) aspects involving VENUS and Saturn - can be very severe. It is similar to “Sun adverse Saturn” cycle, but in this case the effect is more on one’s relationship to romantic companions or the spouse. These are the occasions that are commented on as “romance on ice” in astrology magazines. Indeed, existing romance does usually enter a phase of “the pits.” Recovery is not at all certain, for the influence steals the zest of a relationship. If this aspect is formed by Venus to natal or transiting Saturn, it lasts one or two days. If the aspect is formed by Saturn to natal Venus, it may last 22 days - or up to about six months if Saturn is direct-retrograde-direct over Venus.
  20. Adverse aspects involving VENUS and Uranus - can be very capricious. The effect is similar to the Venus-Mars combination. However, in this case the passion of “Mars-Venus” is replaced by flirtation and responsiveness. This is also a combination that can lead to infidelity, and it usually signals a romantic encounter. If this aspect is formed by Venus to natal or transiting Uranus, it lasts about one or two days - sometimes more than a week if it is a transiting aspect. If the aspect is formed by Uranus to natal Venus, it may last 38 days - or up to about a year if Uranus is direct-retrograde-direct over Venus.
  21. Adverse aspects involving VENUS and Neptune (or Moon adverse Neptune) - mark a cycle of “masquerade love affair.” It can bring about a potent telephatic and psychic bond between two people, but there is always a “catch” associated with the adversity. The catch may turn out to be either a deceptive partner, or self-deception blurring one’s judgement. The person experiencing this aspect may be seriously mislead and hurt. This aspect is also a form of “Fatal Attraction.” It can (easily) lead to infidelity. When the cycle finally ends, the affair may have irrevocably and regrettably changed the circumstances of the person under the spell of this influence. If this aspect is formed by Venus to natal or transiting Neptune, it lasts about one or two days - sometimes more than a week if it is a transiting aspect. If the aspect is formed by Neptune to natal Venus, it may last 76 days - or up to about two years if Neptune is direct-retrograde-direct over Venus.
  22. Adverse aspects (including conjunction) involving VENUS and Pluto (or Moon adverse Pluto) - are similar to the “Venus-Mars” combinations. However, in this case the passion of Mars is enhanced to the potency of a “magnificent obsession.” It is an all-consuming sexual cycle. Many molesters may have this combination in their natal charts. In turn, many rapists may have experienced this combination as a transiting influence - of course, their natal charts must display such a disposition.
  23. Other volatile or frustrating combinations - include the following adverse aspects:
    • “Mars-Saturn” - frustration
    • “Mars-Uranus” - volatile, explosive
    • “Mars-Neptune” - frustration
    • “Mars-Pluto” - stormy, explosive
    • “Jupiter-Saturn” - cross-purposes
    • “Saturn-Uranus” - frustration, intensity
    • “Saturn-Neptune” - cross-purposes
    • “Saturn-Pluto” - a case of “irresistible force/immovable object” “Uranus-Pluto” - perhaps explosive

Comment: A situation involving “Mars conjunct Pluto” at 16 degrees of Scorpio occurred at 4 pm on November 27, 1989. There was a full Moon at 6 degrees of Sagittarius 15 hours later. All persons, but especially Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius individuals (born between the 8th to 12th days of the respective months), may have interesting (and explosive) experiences to tell... on November 26 -28, 1989.
